Tellet interviews run in the web browser, so participants don't need to download or install anything. This article covers what participants need, how to fix common problems, and what IT teams need to allow on a company network.
A phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection
A current version of Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox
A microphone for voice answers, and a camera for video answers, if the study uses them
Participants can switch between Voice, Video and Text, as long as the study allows more than one. If the study allows text, they can take part without a microphone or camera.
iPhones, iPads and Android devices are all supported.
iPhone and iPad: use Safari or Chrome.
Android: use Chrome.
If a participant opens the interview link from inside another app (for example Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn), ask them to open it in Safari or Chrome instead. Built-in app browsers often block the microphone and camera.
Text and voice answers work on any normal home Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Video needs a stronger connection, so Wi-Fi is best.
Limit | |
|---|---|
Voice recording | Up to 10 minutes per answer |
Video recording | Up to 5 minutes per answer |
Image uploads | JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 15 MB each, and up to 10 per message |
A countdown shows when a recording is nearing its limit, and the recording stops on its own when it reaches it.
Participants can only upload images if the study allows image answers. Audio, video and document files can't be uploaded.
The first time a participant records, the browser asks for permission to use the microphone or camera. They need to choose Allow.
Before recording, participants can test their microphone and check their camera. If several cameras are available, as on most phones, a Flip camera button switches between front and back.
The interview shows Microphone blocked or Camera blocked, with steps to fix it:
Tap or click the lock icon next to the web address.
Open Site settings.
Set Microphone or Camera to Allow.
Reload the page.
On an iPhone or iPad, the permission can also be blocked for the whole browser. Check Settings > Safari > Camera or Microphone (or the same under Chrome).
On a Mac or Windows computer, the operating system can also block the browser. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security on a Mac, or Settings > Privacy & security on Windows.
Firefox may ask for permission again for each question. This is normal: choose Allow each time.
Reload the page.
Check the internet connection.
Turn off browser extensions such as ad blockers, and any VPN.
Try a different browser, such as Chrome.
This appears after a few seconds of silence while recording. Check that the microphone isn't muted, that the right microphone is selected, and that no other app is using it.
Close apps that might be using the camera, such as Zoom, Teams or FaceTime, and try again.
If a message or recording fails to send, it's marked Failed to send with a Retry button. Unsent messages are kept on the device, so participants can retry even after reloading the page.
If retrying doesn't work, check the connection. For video, try a shorter recording or switch to Wi-Fi.
Participants can choose Use text input instead or Choose a different method to carry on with another response type.
Progress is saved automatically. To continue, participants open the same interview link again on the same device and in the same browser.
Progress won't carry over if a participant:
switches to another device or browser
uses a private or incognito window and then closes it
clears their browser's cookies
In any of these cases, they start the interview again from the beginning.
If a participant stops for more than 30 minutes, their interview shows as abandoned in your transcripts. They can still come back and finish it, unless the study has reached its maximum number of participants in the meantime.
Message | What it means |
|---|---|
Interview not available | The study hasn't been published yet. |
Study completed | The study has closed and isn't accepting responses. |
Maximum participants reached | The study is full. |
Missing information | The link is missing details the study needs, usually from a panel provider. Check the link the panel is using. |
Study not found | The link is wrong or incomplete. |
Interview already completed | This participant has already taken part. Each person can take part once. |
See Participant journey for what participants see at each step.
If participants or researchers are on a company network with a firewall or content filter, allow HTTPS traffic (port 443) to:
tellet.app and *.tellet.app: the platform, interview and API
*.supabase.co: sign-in, data and file uploads
Recordings upload while the participant is still recording, so SSL inspection or upload size limits on a proxy can make voice and video answers fail. If that happens, exclude the domains above from SSL inspection.
If a problem continues, email [email protected] with:

the device, operating system and browser (with versions if possible)
